Apply a controlled color wash to a pixel skin

The Minecraft skin tint tool blends one selected RGB color into visible pixels of a 64 × 64 skin. Choose an amount from zero to 100 percent and limit the operation to the full visible atlas, mapped base faces, or mapped outer faces. Alpha values remain unchanged, and the processed PNG is downloaded locally.

Tinting is different from replacing a matching color. Every included visible pixel moves toward the tint color by the selected percentage. At zero, the output equals the source. At 100, every processed RGB becomes the chosen tint while keeping each pixel’s original alpha. Values between those limits preserve part of the original palette.

The file, filename, color, amount, model, and output remain in the browser. A first-party example loads automatically.

How the blend works

For each included channel, the result is the original value plus the chosen percentage of the distance to the tint value. A red channel of 100 tinted toward 200 at 50 percent becomes 150. The same calculation is applied independently to green and blue.

This linear RGB blend is deterministic and reversible only when the source is retained. Repeated tint operations on downloaded results can accumulate rounding and reduce palette variation, so always start new experiments from the original.

The tool reports how many pixels changed. Pixels already equal to the tint color can be processed without contributing to the changed count. Fully transparent pixels are skipped and hidden RGB values are not altered.

Choosing the tint amount

Low values around 10–25 percent can unify a palette or create a subtle environmental mood. Midrange values can produce themed color variants. High values strongly suppress original hue differences and can make skin, hair, and clothing difficult to distinguish.

There is no universally correct amount. Pixel art depends on local contrast, so compare face features, garment edges, and limb seams after every adjustment. A count alone cannot measure readability.

All, base, and outer scopes

All visible pixels applies the blend to every nontransparent atlas position. Base scope processes only mapped head, torso, arm, and leg base faces. Outer scope processes hat, jacket, sleeve, and trouser-layer faces.

Layer scopes allow useful separation. Tint the outer layer to test a jacket color mood while preserving the character below, or tint base faces while keeping accessories unchanged. The scope uses the selected Classic or Slim UV map.

Classic and Slim differ in arm-face widths. Choose the intended geometry before applying base or outer scope. If uncertain, inspect the file with the Minecraft skin model detector.

All-visible scope can include color outside mapped faces. Run the illegal pixel checker if hidden residue should be diagnosed or cleaned rather than tinted.

Alpha preservation and transparency

Tinting changes RGB only. Fully opaque pixels stay opaque; partially transparent outer details retain their exact alpha; fully transparent pixels stay untouched. This prevents a color effect from accidentally creating visible background pixels.

The tool does not fix transparent base holes. Use the transparent pixel fixer for coordinate-based diagnosis and an explicit fill. It also does not change partial alpha behavior across game clients or renderers.

Tint versus color replacement

Tint is appropriate when the desired effect should influence many different colors: a warm sunset mood, cold blue variant, green spectral cast, or coordinated team theme. It preserves a percentage of the original colors rather than looking for a specific source.

Use the Minecraft skin color replacer when only one uniform color family should change. The replacer supports exact matching, tolerance, and relative brightness; it leaves nonmatching colors alone.

For more complex artwork, combine tools carefully: retain a master, create one tint output, compare it, then manually correct selected pixels in the Minecraft skin editor. Avoid repeatedly transforming already transformed files.

A safe creative workflow

Upload an exact 64 × 64 PNG or use the example. Choose Classic or Slim, select the scope, choose the tint color, and move the amount slider. Compare the original and result previews at full pixel size.

Start with a low amount and increase gradually. Check eyes, mouth, hair boundaries, clothing contrast, and overlay edges. Download the result under a new filename and preview it in the 3D skin viewer before import.

If the result is too flat, return to the original rather than trying to reverse the tint mathematically. Manual shading can then be added in the editor.

What the tint tool does not do

It does not understand semantic parts such as hair or shoes beyond base/outer UV scope. It does not generate palettes, adjust alpha, repair dimensions, convert models, or certify platform acceptance. It cannot ensure sufficient contrast for every display.

The operation is also not a lighting simulation. A warm tint can suggest lighting, but it does not calculate face direction, shadows, highlights, or 3D illumination.

Privacy and ownership

Browser canvas APIs handle decoding, blending, preview, and export. There is no account, database, gallery, or upload API. Closing the page discards active state unless the output was downloaded.
