Generate the complete head strip

This Minecraft head template generator creates a compact 64×16 RGBA PNG containing all six base head faces and all six corresponding hat-layer faces. It preserves their original modern skin-atlas coordinates, fills selected faces with a chosen color, adds optional color-coded borders, reports coverage, and downloads the result locally.

The output is intentionally different from a square front-face avatar. It is a UV working strip: top, bottom, right, front, left, and back surfaces for both head layers. A renderer can fold those rectangles around a cube when they are returned to their normal atlas positions.

Understanding the 64×16 layout

The modern head occupies the first sixteen rows of a 64×64 skin. Base top and bottom faces sit in the first row group, while base side, front, and back faces occupy the next. The second set begins farther right and stores the optional hat layer.

Cropping that complete strip to 64×16 removes torso and limb space without shifting any head coordinates. It is useful for focused painting, references, teaching diagrams, head asset review, and pipelines that later paste the strip back into rows zero through fifteen of a full atlas.

The file is not an 8×8 face crop. The Minecraft skin face cropper extracts only the front face and can composite the front hat face. This template instead retains all twelve head UV rectangles.

Base head and hat layer

The base head is mandatory artwork. It usually contains the face, sides of the head, hair base, top, underside, and back. All six surfaces should be deliberately completed. Transparent holes inside base faces can produce missing patches.

The hat layer is optional. Despite its name, it can create hair volume, glasses, masks, hoods, helmet detail, ear-like pixel shapes within the cube, or other raised accents. Empty hat coordinates should remain transparent.

The generator fills both sets because the page is a mapping reference. A finished design should erase unnecessary hat pixels. If you need a base-only mask for the entire body, use the Minecraft base layer template. If you need all outer body parts, use the overlay template.

Using fill and guides

Enable fill to paint every selected head coordinate with one opaque color. The mask makes the twelve rectangles easy to select and prevents them from disappearing on a transparent checkerboard. Change the color for contrast with your editor or planned artwork.

Guide borders use the head guide color and are real pixels in the downloaded PNG. They show where each face begins and ends. Keep them in a locked reference layer, paint over them, or disable guides before export. Do not assume a game will hide guide colors.

With fill disabled and guides enabled, the output becomes a transparent head wireframe. With both disabled, the PNG is empty. The metrics panel reports 64×16 dimensions, included face count, and the number of painted coordinates.

Painting a head that wraps correctly

Start with the front face, but do not design it in isolation. Extend hairlines around right and left faces. Continue hats and bands across adjacent edges. Check the top orientation before placing directional patterns, and remember that the underside can be visible from below.

The back face is as important as the front when a character turns. Keep large shapes coherent around corners, but use contrast so eyes, mouth, hair, and accessories remain readable at native scale. One pixel represents a substantial part of the face.

Use a pixel editor with antialiasing, smoothing, and feathering disabled. Keep selections aligned to integer coordinates. Save an editable layered source with the guide, base art, and hat art separated, even if the final texture is flattened.

Returning the strip to a full skin

The 64×16 PNG is a focused asset, not normally a complete playable character texture. To use it in a modern skin, place it at coordinate (0, 0) in a 64×64 document without scaling. Rows sixteen through sixty-three should come from the target skin.

When pasting, use exact source replacement or carefully controlled alpha composition. A normal “paste over” operation can leave old pixels beneath transparent areas, especially in the hat layer. Inspect the resulting full atlas with the skin diff tool if you need exact changed-coordinate evidence.

Classic and Slim selection

The head UV map is identical for Classic and Slim models. The selector is retained so the same workflow and metadata can follow the intended final skin, but changing it does not alter the twelve head rectangles or painted-pixel count.

Arm geometry only matters outside the head strip. When the generated head is inserted into a complete skin, choose the full-body model based on arm artwork. Use the model detector when that evidence needs review.

Alpha and export checks

Keep base head faces opaque unless transparent base pixels are deliberately required by a verified target renderer. Keep unused hat positions transparent. Partial alpha may be interpreted differently across platforms, so test it in the intended client.

Confirm the focused export remains exactly 64×16 RGBA PNG. A general photo editor may resize it, remove transparency, or blur borders. When inserted into a full skin, validate the completed 64×64 file with the Minecraft skin checker.

Rotate the result in the 3D skin viewer. Check front, back, both sides, above, and below with the hat layer toggled. A correct flat map can still contain artistic seams or reversed directional detail.

Privacy and rights

The template is generated in browser memory. No selected color, model value, pixel, filename, or download is sent to a server. There is no login, database, cloud project, or public gallery.

Why is the download 64×16 instead of 8×8?
