Convert a modern skin into the old canvas size

This 64x64 to 64x32 skin converter creates a legacy-size PNG from a modern Minecraft skin. It keeps the complete upper half of the 64 × 64 atlas, places those pixels unchanged into a 64 × 32 canvas, and reports how many opaque pixels existed in the lower half that cannot fit. The conversion runs locally in your browser. The selected filename, image pixels, color values, result, and loss count are never sent to an upload service.

Why 64 × 64 cannot be perfectly reduced to 64 × 32

The modern atlas is more than a taller version of the legacy atlas. Its lower half stores independent left-arm and left-leg faces plus newer outer-layer regions for the torso, arms, and legs. A legacy 64 × 32 texture does not have addresses for those areas. Older rendering behavior mirrors the right arm and right leg artwork instead of reading independent left-limb textures.

That structural difference makes this operation lossy. Cropping to the upper half is predictable, but it cannot preserve artwork painted only on the left limbs or modern-only overlays. The converter therefore counts every nontransparent pixel in rows 32 through 63 and shows the number before download. A nonzero count is a warning that visible design information may be lost, not a claim that every counted pixel was important.

If the goal is to modernize an old file instead, use the 64x32 to 64x64 skin converter. That direction can mirror legacy limb faces into the independent modern positions without throwing away a lower half.

How to use the converter

Choose Upload 64 × 64 PNG and select a standard-size skin. The tool verifies that the file is PNG, no larger than the local safety limit, and exactly 64 pixels wide by 64 pixels high. The two previews update after decoding. The modern source is square; the legacy result has a two-to-one aspect ratio.

Review the discarded pixel count before selecting Download 64 × 32 PNG. If the count is zero, the lower half was already transparent, although you should still preview the output in the intended legacy environment. If the count is high, inspect the source with the Minecraft skin layer splitter or layer viewer to understand which details occupy modern-only areas.

Keep both files. Give the legacy export a new name instead of replacing the modern original. Conversion changes format capability, and the modern file remains the better master copy for later editing.

What the output preserves

Every RGBA value in the upper 64 × 32 region is copied directly. That region includes the legacy head, hat, torso, right arm, and right leg mappings. Transparent pixels remain transparent, partially transparent pixels retain their alpha values, and colors are not quantized or resampled. Because the width is unchanged, there is no interpolation and no blurry scaling.

The output is a real PNG canvas with dimensions 64 × 32. It is not a renamed 64 × 64 file, a screenshot, or a visual crop displayed only by CSS. You can verify dimensions with the Minecraft skin checker after downloading it.

What the output does not preserve

The converter does not flatten the modern jacket, sleeves, or trouser layers onto base pixels. It does not synthesize a replacement for unique left-arm or left-leg artwork. It does not decide which modern decorations matter, recolor the design, infer a Classic or Slim arm model, or guarantee acceptance by a particular game version, launcher, server, or skin pack.

Automatic flattening would be a different creative operation. It could obscure base artwork, change translucent colors, and produce seams where overlay geometry was meant to sit above the body. This tool deliberately performs a simple, inspectable layout export and makes the loss visible.

Classic, Slim, and legacy expectations

Legacy 64 × 32 layouts are associated with the original mirrored-limb workflow. Modern Slim skins rely on three-pixel arm geometry, while many legacy systems expect the older Classic arm presentation. Cropping a Slim atlas does not magically convert its geometry. If arm width is central to the design, first review it with the skin model detector and test the result in the exact client that will consume it.

Compatibility also depends on context. A PNG with valid dimensions can still be rejected because of account restrictions, application rules, pack metadata, or moderation. Privacy and ownership

All image work uses browser image and canvas APIs. There is no account, cloud draft, database, gallery, or upload endpoint. Closing the page clears the active workspace unless you downloaded the result. Only convert artwork you created or have permission to modify. Changing dimensions does not grant rights to another creator’s character, logo, or costume.

Frequently asked questions

Is this conversion reversible?

Not completely. Converting the 64 × 32 result back to 64 × 64 can recreate mirrored limbs, but it cannot recover unique pixels discarded from the original lower half.

Why does the tool report discarded pixels?

The number makes loss measurable. It helps distinguish a modern file whose lower half is empty from one with significant independent limbs or overlays.

Does the converter resize the artwork?

No. It copies the upper atlas region at native pixel resolution and removes the modern-only rows.

Should I delete my 64 × 64 source?

No. Keep it as the editable master and treat the 64 × 32 download as a compatibility export.
