What “128×128 skin” means

A 128×128 atlas has twice the width and twice the height of the common 64×64 modern skin. It contains four times as many pixels. In a proportional HD layout, every normal UV coordinate becomes a 2×2 block and every face dimension doubles.

For example, an 8×8 head front becomes 16×16, a Classic four-pixel arm front becomes eight pixels wide, and a Slim three-pixel arm front becomes six pixels wide. Relative positions stay aligned because the entire atlas uses one integer scale.

The extra pixels can support finer clusters and smoother curves, but this generator does not invent detail. A filled template is a structural guide. Artists must create additional information rather than treating enlarged blocks as automatically higher quality.

Compatibility is not universal

The familiar vanilla Java skin workflow commonly expects 64×64 PNGs. Some Bedrock, server, mod, resource-pack, launcher, rendering, or third-party avatar systems accept 128×128 textures, while others resize, reject, or misread them. Support must be confirmed in the exact target environment.

Do not assume that “HD” is a universal format flag embedded in the image. A correctly encoded 128×128 PNG can still be incompatible with an importer. This page provides a proportionally mapped texture template, not an account uploader or platform approval service.

Exact scaling and guide behavior

The generator first paints selected UV faces on a 64×64 logical canvas. It then performs nearest-neighbor 2× scaling. Each RGBA pixel is copied into four identical output pixels. No smoothing, interpolation, blur, or new colors are introduced.

Guide borders are also scaled. A one-pixel logical guide becomes two physical output pixels thick. These borders are part of the downloaded file. Keep them in a reference layer, paint over them, or disable guides before creating a clean mask.

Fill applies one opaque color to selected face interiors. Unused atlas coordinates remain transparent. Disable fill for a wireframe-style guide. Disabling both fill and guides produces an empty 128×128 transparent PNG.

Classic and Slim at HD scale

Classic and Slim retain their geometry ratio. Classic arm fronts and backs become eight output pixels wide; Slim becomes six. The selector calculates the correct logical arm map before scaling, so it does not simply crop columns from a finished Classic output.

Choose the final model before detailed painting. Converting completed HD arm artwork between Classic and Slim can require deliberate column removal or reconstruction. A plain PNG may not force every renderer to choose the intended geometry.

A practical HD artwork workflow

Download the template and open it in an editor that supports exact pixels and alpha. Keep nearest-neighbor display enabled. Although the atlas has more resolution, antialiased brushes can still create unwanted partial alpha and muddy edge colors.

Design at 128×128 when genuine extra detail is needed. Preserve major shapes and contrast at a scale that remains readable after the character is reduced on screen. Use the added resolution for controlled curves, fabric edges, facial detail, and shading—not for random noise.

Maintain a layered source with guides, base surfaces, outer surfaces, shading, and accessories separated. Regularly preview at small display sizes. A texture that looks detailed at 800% zoom can become visually flat or noisy during gameplay.

Downscaling and round-trip limits

Downscaling from 128×128 to 64×64 is inherently lossy when each 2×2 block contains different colors. A deterministic nearest-neighbor converter must choose one representative coordinate; averaging creates new colors and can blur pixel art.

If you expect to publish both sizes, establish a master strategy early. One option is to design the 64×64 version first, upscale it, then add HD detail while retaining the standard original. Another is to design HD and manually author a separate low-resolution version instead of relying on automatic reduction.

Validation before use

When a platform rejects the file, test the equivalent 64×64 version. If that succeeds, the likely problem may be HD support rather than UV artwork. Record the platform, client version, importer path, and any server or mod requirement so compatibility decisions remain reproducible.
